First-ever HBCU Chess Classic set for April 22, 2023 in Atlanta
Atlanta, GA, USA—The Black Odyssey (TBO) Chess Society proudly presents the first-ever HBCU Chess Classic on April 22, 2023 at the Morris Brown Dr. Gloria L. Anderson Multi-Purpose Complex in Atlanta. This exhilarating Swiss-style chess tournament will feature talented students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities battling it out for the HBCU Chess Classic Champion title. It begins at 10AM.
The tournament will feature over a dozen teams from esteemed HBCUs such as Howard University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College. The HBCU Chess Classic promises to be an unmissable event with notable personalities like Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, Chakazulu, and Artist CyHi The Prynce in attendance.
The Black Odyssey Chess Society, or TBO, aims to bridge the gap between chess and the Black community and promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills through chess play. The organization’s mission and values are to establish a chapter in every HBCU and increase the chess presence in the community by exposing students to the game at an early age.
Following the tournament, there will be a post-tournament mixer and yard fest with food, drinks, and entertainment provided by TBO. This event is perfect for everyone to socialize and enjoy the HBCU culture and community.
